“The Bulger Mystique.”
September 20, 1988
Boston Globe. In the first of two articles, the newspaper reveal that James Bulger has been an informant for the FBI since October 1975, as the bureau attempted to use the Irish-American gangster to build a case against the Italian-American criminal organization led by Gennaro Angiulo. The Globe later quotes a state trooper saying, “There’s no difference between these guys. Some of ‘em got o’s before their last name, some of ‘em got o’s at the end.” A U.S. House Committee calls what is described as the “special relationship” between the FBI and Bulger as “one of the greatest failures in the history of law enforcement” in 2003.
